The Twelve Guardians are powerful demi-gods created by Gaia, Syndel and Death to watch over the lands of Medius in the gods' absence due a non-interference pledge.

The Twelve Guardians are ageless sentient animals with vast magical power. Each guardian has a natural animal form but also possesses the ability to shape-shift into a mortal form (Human, Jakkai, Fairy, Khamega, etc) as a disguise to walk amongst mortals without attracting attention; however, in both their natural and disguise forms, the symbol of their magical element is displayed visibly somewhere on their body.

There are three guardians for each of the four main magical elements which accounts for the twelve total.

Water Toski the Rabbit Broxis the Wolf Milothys the Dolphin
Fire Siara the Lynx Rynn the Flame Dragon Melli the Fire Bee
Wind Fuzen'ro the Bat Meeros the Mortori Bird Aquilos the Falcon
Earth Jaspin the Mole Moku the Snake Vidane the Stag

Most Guardians remained neutral during the Great War between Heaven and Hell, even when it was being fought on Medius, as they are all the creations of both Gaia and Syndel. However, Siara the Lynx and Melli the Bee sided with Heaven whilst Broxis the Wolf and Toski the Rabbit sided with Hell.

Powers and Abilities[]

Magic[]

All Guardians possess vast magical power in their particular element of influence. For example, Siara the Lynx is a fire-elemental Guardian so has powerful fire magic. They can apparently grant special spells to mortals who are skilled in the guardian's element. Heathcliff "Cliff" Sinclair (a fire mage) received a powerful fire spell from Siara that he dubs "the Siara Special". This spell is devastatingly effective compared to more mundane spells, though he requires help from his fairy companion in order to gather enough power to cast it.

Guardians are tied to the magical forces of Medius, and the death of one is enough to throw the world out of balance. Moku's death at the hands of Moonshade is seemingly tied to ensuing drought in the Dragon Archipelago[1], as well as an unusually late spring, while Melli's death caused a thunderstorm to suddenly break out. Guardians and their descendants are able to sense this unbalance, which gives them nausea-like symptoms.

Guardians and their descendants seem able to recognize one another: Meeros, while discussing the low magic abilities of ordinary Medians, noted that Rhea was "odd" in that regard, in a way that reminded him of Cliff.[2] Moonshade was also able to feel Rhea's awakening power, as well as a strong presence of Guardian magic that included Mokurynn's egg. Similarly, some creatures appear capable of sensing a Guardian's aura.[3]

Natural Form and Shape-Shifting[]

Each Guardian possesses two forms with the ability to switch between them at will. The Guardian's natural form is an animal as indicated by their name; however, their appearance clearly distinguishes them from ordinary animals, as they are usually significantly bigger than normal members of the species. Their animal form also clearly displays the symbol of their magical element somewhere on their body. Another notable feature is that while in their true form they will emit an aura that indicates their immense magic power. The aura they emit will also be in the color of their element: for instance, Melli the Fire Bee’s was red, and Meeros’s, being Wind, is green.

If the Guardian so chooses to move amongst mortals without wanting to attract attention, they can switch to their disguise form as one of the mortal races. Each Guardian has (apparently) only one disguise form, they may disguise themselves as Humans, Jakkai, or even Fairies and Khamega; this form generally appears "normal" to mortals although traits of their animal form carry through (same eye color, hair is the same color as their fur, etc). Most notably, the magical element symbol can carry over into their disguise form; Toski the Rabbit bears a blue tattoo on her right arm of the water element symbol whilst in her human form disguise.

Immortality[]

Guardians are immortal, having existed since the creation of Medius. Melli claims she cannot be killed by any "mortal weapon", and that her wounds would usually heal in a matter of seconds. However, Moonshade's knife is able to deal damage to her that cannot be healed, hinting at the existence of weapons that can harm even Guardians.

It might be possible for one Guardian to kill another. Moonshade's venom (in his giant cobra form) is implied to have that ability[4], and Meeros is aware that he'd be "finished" if Moonshade bites him.[5]

Curses[]

Finally, each Guardian possesses the ability to bestow a curse upon mortals if they feel like it; they can do so as a punishment or just due to annoyance or amusement. These curses cause the affected person to transform into the same animal as the Guardian that gave them the curse (Meeros' curse turns you into a Mortori Bird, Toski's turns you into a Snow Bunny, etc). Cursed forms do not necessarily resemble the Guardian's animal form in color: while Toski and Broxis have gray bodies, Kieri and Kazai's curse forms are fully white. The curse is seemingly permanent unless the Guardian decides to remove it and usually the victim has no control over the effect, unable to return to their original form at all whilst it's in effect. Only the respective Guardian can remove their own curse and not curses by other Guardians. It is not possible to be cursed by more than one Guardian at a time.[6]

Kieri Suizahn was cursed by Toski to turn into a Snow Bunny; however, she is able to shift in and out of it, mainly involuntarily after sneezing. This is because Angels and Demons have higher magic resistances than the average Median, so it's likely that the curse was incomplete. However, she learned how to control it, and can now shift forms at will. [7] A cursed Angel's emotional state can affect their form: Kazai Suizahn was cursed by Broxis to turn into a wolf, however he would sport wolf body parts whenever his anger got rampant, in various degrees between just ears and tail to full-on wolf head and paws. Following his fight with Kieri and subsequent defeat, he appeared to be stuck in his cursed form. As Star Emblems increase an Angel's magical power, they can help mitigate the curse's effects.

Toski was the first Guardian to be featured prominently. She is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. She fought on the side of Hell and describes Angels as "self-righteous punks".

Kieri tried to stop her from robbing a shop in Farun, but Toski cursed her out of malice and ran away. However, she didn't account for Angels' higher magic resistance, unknowingly giving Kieri what would become a useful transformation ability.

Siara the Lynx[]

Siara is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. She fought on the side of Heaven.

There have been hints of a familial relationship between Siara and Heathcliff "Cliff" Sinclair, even though the latter insists she is not his "grandma".[8] Siara granted Cliff the "Siara Special" spell, a Fire spell so powerful that Cliff cannot cast it alone. Following the birth of Cliff's daughter Florina, he expressed worry that Siara might want to meet his "kitten", but stated he had no way to contact her and wouldn't worry about that yet.

Meeros the Mortori Bird[]

Meeros remained neutral during the Great War.

He is somewhat of a prankster and attention-seeker. He is noted to have a particular liking for St. Curtis' Spring Flower Festival and enjoys flying to the city through the Southern Pass over the travelers, impressing them with a magic light-show as he goes. He's also been implied to have a particular reaction to certain types of couples.[9]

Melli is one of the four Guardians who chose to fight in the Great War. She fought on the side of Heaven.

She makes her home in St. Curtis which is famous for its honey. During the festival she runs an Archery stand at the Midway for anyone to test their marksmanship. Melli is noted for "hating Demons about as much as Toski hates Angels".

Melli was killed by Moonshade, who had apparently found a way to harm a Guardian.

Fuzen'ro the Bat[]

Fuzen'ro remained neutral during the Great War.

They make their home in the Fuzen'ro Forest which is where Rhea's Jakkai village is located. The local Jakkai hold a festival in Fuzen'ro's honor every year; ruins in the forest, including a statue of the Guardian, show that worship of Fuzen'ro dates back to ancient times.

Moku the Snake[]

Moku remained neutral during the Great War.

At some point in the story, Moonshade was able to kill him and steal his powers for his own.[10] Moonshade is a descendant of Moku; presumably his son, as his daughter Rhea is stated in the Book of Records to be Moku's grandchild. She's said to always have had some affinity for Moku, owning imagery of him whereas her village worshiped Fuzen'ro the Bat.

Moku's name is one half of Mokurynn's, possibly hinting at some unknown relation.

Milothys the Dolphin[]

Milothys remained neutral during the Great War; however, he's said to love Angels.[11]

According to Meeros, Milothys is said to live on the southern coast of Fragaria at Port Dorade. As a Water Guardian, he might have some influence on curses cast by Toski and Broxis.

Milothys seems to be featured in a children's book called The Winter Solstice, along with the other Water Guardians.[12]

Descendants[]

Based on what was uttered by Moonshade during his confrontation with Melli, it is possible for the Guardians to have descendants[13]; which could mean that at one point, some of them would have had offspring with either one of each other (which could explain Mokurynn, for him/her to have a name after two Guardians) or even a regular Median (which could explain Moonshade's similar snake-like appearance to Moku).

A Guardian's descendants are said to be able to connect to the power of their bloodline. One possible way to do it is through use of the magic-boosting yellow Rainbow Reverie potion, as was the case for Rhea: in doing so, she obtained snake-like characteristics that quickly went away, and was able to hear a voice that could belong to another member of the bloodline. However, in the following weeks, she regained a snake tail as well as patches of scales, possibly showing that the process is more gradual.

Moonshade mentions that his own Guardian powers were obtained by force, as a result of killing Moku; but since he lacks the direct blessing of the gods, he cannot use his powers to their full extent. Melli and Rhea were able to identify Moonshade as a "fake" Moku, with J adding that there was something "missing" to him. It can be assumed that to obtain a Guardian's full power, their descendant needs to receive said blessing. This could mean that while a Guardian might have several descendants, only one of them could succeed to them; however, as of now, there are no known cases of a Guardian's descendant succeeding to their ancestor.

Trivia[]

  • While the Twelve Guardians operate on Medius, Angels seem to have some knowledge of them: Kazai was able to recognize Broxis's name, but didn't know who Moku, Melli[14] or Meeros[15] were. It is possible their knowledge (or at least Kazai's) only extends to Guardians that took part in the Great War.
