The tritagonist of Slightly Damned, Kieri Suizahn is a female Water Angel from Heaven, a member of the great Suizahn Clan of Warriors. Despite her lineage, she is actually quite shy and reserved. She is usually quiet and avoids the spotlight, but true to her roots, is actually very powerful and capable to fight when angered.

Appearance[]

Kieri Suizahn Portrait

Kieri in her first appearance.

As an Angel, Kieri resembles an extremely pale Human with pointed ears, white hair and a slightly frailer build. Her hair is dyed blue except for her side bangs, as with all female Angels. She has blue eyes, and her hair stands into a two-pronged cowlick at the back. She wears her Sun Emblem as a necklace: it grants her white feathered wings, which she can hide or reveal at will; she often keeps them concealed to avoid attracting attention.

She has scars on her forearms, possibly self-inflicted due to her troubled past. While they were hidden under her sleeves and only alluded to, they've seen been seen due to her changing outfits; they appear faded from how long they've been on her. Like all Water Angels, she bears a tattoo of the Water symbol on her left arm.

Kieri's Angel uniform consists of a long blue tabard that reaches to her ankles with the water element symbol displayed on it in light blue. The rest of the uniform is a dark blue, including the pants. Her shirt is long sleeved with a loose turtle-neck collar, and is entirely white except for a light blue wave pattern around the wrists. Her pants also feature the same wave pattern around her ankles. She wears light blue slippers on her feet.

In St. Curtis, she's offered a pink shirt with a bee and the phrase "Bee Happy" on it, which she mostly wears to sleep. After her final battle with Lazuli, her uniform would get tarnished and was given a shirt to wear in the meantime. It is a teal-colored shirt with rims of her sleeves having a red and darker-teal arrow pattern.

Prior to leaving St. Curtis, Kieri decided to return her hair to its natural color and don a new outfit to travel in. Her attire consists of a violet shirt with a wavy-line pattern around the rims, violet colored pants, brown finger-less gloves and long brown boots that go up to her knees. Over that is a pink garment with bright-pink rims around the neck area and lead downward, forming a large floral design on each side of the dress while flowers of varying size hang slightly above or to the side of them. The piece is held together by a light-blue belt with white wavy lines. The belt also serves to hold her sword up.

Personality[]

Kieri has low self-esteem, so she looks up to Rhea for confidence and strength. She is also very shy, often has trouble interacting with strangers and can easily be frightened. She tends to have difficulty standing up for herself when others speak, sometimes leaving her intimidated. However when pushed to, she is quick to respond to danger with a sword, acting on her instincts as a warrior to protect those she considers friends. Even then, she usually relies on Rhea and Buwaro to comfort her and lighten her spirits when able and she in turn supports them the best she can.

Kieri is shown to have selective mutism, in which she only speaks in certain situations or to those she's more comfortable with, most often to Buwaro.[1] After everything that happened in St. Curtis and the argument with Kazai, she's become more quiet and barely spoke at all. This does not prevent her from expressing other emotions, as she was easily flustered when Buwaro said "I love you" in Sign Lingo in front of her for the first time. Since learning Sign Lingo as well, she's become able to express herself more easily.

With time, while still holding onto her kind persona, Kieri has slowly started to become more assertive and grow into a stronger person; such as when she held a Khamega at sword-point when he tried to steal Crunky, when she intimidated Rhea with a look when the Jakkai fantasized the idea of using Crunky for money, and when she grabbed and attacked an Angel who tried to hurt Buwaro. However, while she is ready to defend her friends at any cost, she's not so able to defend herself from the same situations.

This confrontation has revealed that Kieri suffers emotional scars inflicted upon her by her mother, who both verbally and physically abused her for not meeting her expectations. It's also shown that her depression leads to her having suicidal thoughts; and though implied by the scars she has hidden under her sleeves she might have attempted it at some point. Whenever something relating to her past experiences is happening upfront, she tends to lose control of her well-being; she's known to enter a state of blind rage and inflict damage on property and people alike.

As part of her upbringing in Heaven, Kieri was taught Demons were nothing but monsters, feeling no emotion and wanting people to suffer. This caused her to be afraid of Buwaro when she first met him, and not understand why he was being kind to her. She soon grew feelings for him, which brought her a lot of doubts as she felt she was betraying her family, who are Demon slayers by tradition. However, when she met again with her brother Kazai and he was quick to disapprove of their relationship, she tried to push Buwaro away for his own safety as she felt she had to choose between her friends and her duty as a Warrior. But the realization that Demons were people too made it much more difficult; her battle against Lazuli was the tipping point, where she decided that she did not want to kill anymore.

Kieri has a complicated relationship with her family and heritage, and especially with Kazai. They were always lumped together as the Suizahn Twins, but as she was less adept as a Warrior than him, she felt inferior and useless. Her lackluster performances earned a lot of disappointment from her parents, especially her mother; the latter of which had a massive negative impact on Kieri's self-esteem and general well-being. Most of Kieri's personal growth throughout the story comes from her distancing herself from her family's expectations and coming into her own.

Unlike her family, Kieri shows a lot of interest in Medians and their culture, to the point she's the only one who learned to speak Lingo. She also knows about subjects such as the Twelve Guardians or the major cities of Fragaria; however, she tends to misinterpret some cultural items such as Human birthdays, leading her to give gifts to her friends on her own birthday. This also tends to result in Rhea teasing her in subjects that she mildly understands to the point of embarrassment.

Kieri is considered a vegetarian, which is a common trait Angels have, and eating meat will make her physically ill. Like most Angels, she is afraid of the dark as she cannot see very well.

Powers and Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: While not as experienced as her brother, Kieri has displayed proficient fighting capabilities to where she is the best fighter of her friends, often protecting them from Medians or Demons who may impose them. She usually works with others when fighting Demons, however because of her depression and the traumatic experience with her mother and various others, it can cause her to momentarily freeze up in fear or go berserk. With her acquisition of her brother's Star Emblem, her magic capabilities increase when she incorporates it in battle.

Water Magic: A natural ability for all Water Angels, Kieri has shown to be able to conjure up water which can be used in battle or for other things. She is also able to freeze her targets through ice-related spells, which she is often seen doing more than water.

  • Water Jet: First used while in curse form, Kieri can cause water to burst through a sheet of ice which can temporarily disorient an Earth Demon. It can also come directly from her hands.
  • Ice Encase: Along with her sword, Kieri can freeze targets or cause ice to form over anyone or anything she hits. She can also form an ice bridge she can walk on using both hands.
  • Magic Bubble: A spell that can deflect or hold off enemy attacks. However with Kieri it doesn't often hold well when faced with stronger enemies as a Seraph Angel could easily destroy it.
  • Water Bubbles: By forming a circle with her hands to form a blue outline, Kieri can blow out a stream of small water bubbles. This is considered a very easy spell to perform as it was the first spell Kieri ever learned. They seem to be durable enough to contain fire inside as when Buwaro attempted to blow out water through her hands he mixed a part of his Fire Breath into it.

Holy Magic: The very natural magical ability for all Angels, Holy Magic uses light to damage their enemies (especially on Demons) and even heal. Kieri has shown to use it on a few occasions and seems to have little skill in using it; however compared to Kazai she seems to have a better proficiency in healing magic than her brother. Since obtaining his Star Emblem, she has access to stronger spells she hasn't used before.

  • Holy Blast: Kieri can unleash a blast of Holy Magic with her hands. A small blast is strong enough to destroy the top of a wooden flower target, leaving burn marks and smoke. However given her experience it can be overpowered by Darkness Magic.
  • Healing: Using Holy magic, Kieri is able to restore the target's vitality to a degree. However its effectiveness varies depending on the condition of the target as they may be in too critical of a condition to where they can be saved. Despite previous beliefs, this spell 'can' work on Demons with the same results.
  • Shooting Stars: By drawing a magic circle with the palm of his hand, Kieri can unleash a stream of stars, which are sharp enough to cut off even horns, that have the potential of causing major damage to those hit by them. She first used this against a Thunderbolt Wyvern and was able to knock it unconscious.

Kieri as a Snow Rabbit.

Curse Form - Snow Rabbit: Kieri was cursed by Toski the Rabbit, causing her to turn into a snow rabbit. However, as Guardian curses are less effective on Angels, Kieri can shift in and out of her rabbit form: she first did it involuntarily through sneezing, and gradually learned to control it, to the point she can do it at will. The transformation is instantaneous and makes a "poing" sound when it happens. Even in her cursed state, she retains her magical powers.

Adept Swordsmanship Specialist: Despite her own beliefs of being a failed Warrior Angel, Kieri is very capable of fighting with a sword. She is capable of blocking a Holy Arrow with her sword after being fired by a Seraph Angel, or use it as a magical focus in order to use spells in conjunction with her sword. While her fighting style is mostly defensive, she is able to attack and even deal the killing blow.

Adept Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Over the course of the series, Kieri has displayed a fair amount of skill when it comes to fighting when magic or weapons prove useless. During her fight with Lazuli, Kieri displayed some close combat capability when she swept Lazuli off her feet with a low kick. Against her brother, she was able to maneuver past one of his more powerful spells in order to give him a hard kick from above.

Multilingual: Kieri is capable of speaking both Lingo and Angelic.

  • Lingo: Kieri has been learning about Lingo ever since she was young, due to her interest in Median culture. Thanks to this, she can fully speak in Lingo around other Medians with no problem. She's known to have a slight accent.
  • Sign Lingo: Since leaving St. Curtis, Kieri has been learning how to do Sign Lingo with Buwaro; thanks to the book they were given from Kinako.

Enhanced Durability: Kieri has shown to withstand taking damage from attacks caused by people who are more skilled and even more powerful than her. She was able to survive a battle with Lazuli, a Demon with greater skill in Water Magic as well as naturally being stronger than her, and even taking several powerful attacks by Denevol, a Seraph Angel.

Equipment[]

Holy Water Sword: Her weapon of choice, blessed with Holy Magic which prevents Demons and Hell-damned souls from holding it. It also acts as a magic focus for her Water Magic.

Sun Emblem: Her first pendant, that she obtained after a difficult year of training. By wearing this pendant, wings will appear on her back and she can fly if needed.

  • Flight: The Angel Wings that come from wearing the pendant are large enough where she can fly and be able to carry one person.

Star Emblem: Originally owned by her brother, she ended up confiscating it after defeating him in battle. By wearing this pendant, her magic power increases while also improving her concentration.

  • Enhanced Concentration: While active, a halo appears over her head which allows her to perform high-level spells. The soft glow from the halo can also serve as a light source while in the dark. It also seems to ease her selective mutism to a degree.

Relationships[]

Kazai Suizahn[]

Kazai is Kieri's twin brother and they have been together since they were born; she hatched just before he did. Although they have been close since childhood, Kieri has always felt like she was living in her brother's shadow as he excelled in combat while she fell short. While he was supportive of her during training, he was baffled at her liking of Median culture, not understanding why anyone would want to learn about it.

Kieri wanting to find Kazai again after being separated is the initial motive that would set Team Rhea on their journey. As the two of them have been lumped together as the Suizahn Twins from an early age, Kieri's own personality didn't get to shine until they were separated in Medius. After reuniting with him, while at first he appeared supportive of her, it became clear he wanted Kieri to return to their old dynamic, which she's grown out of. A rift between them started to grow the more he displayed his ignorance for her feelings and interests; but the breaking point was when Kazai claimed Kieri's friends could never possibly love her, and that her family was more important.

Following their fight, their relationship seems to have shifted, with Kieri now taking the lead and Kazai obeying her. However, she still has trouble forgiving him, for she doesn't know how to feel about him: having lived in his shadow all her life, she's only now starting to put herself first. She does love him, and is willing to put herself in danger to save him, for she knows he's hurting too but denies it.

Arla Suizahn[]

Arla has been a rather negative influence in Kieri's life, having high expectations for her daughter and being dismissive of her weak moments ever since Kieri was a child. Whenever Kieri fell short, her mother abused her physically and emotionally. This abuse goes as far as causing Kieri to self-harm and possibly attempt suicide, affecting her even to this day.

Khalav Suizahn[]

Kieri had a much more positive relationship with her father, Khalav Suizahn. He was kind and supportive of her, often telling her stories and singing her songs, promising he would always protect her, and hugging her with his wings, and she was shocked to learn of how he lost an arm to a Demon.

Kieri deeply loves her father, but his quiet and distant character makes it hard to talk to him sometimes. While he was aware of Arla's abuse, he kept quiet about it, saying she was just worried about Kieri.

Zahariah Sanjulo[]

Sanjulo is a comrade of Kieri and Kazai, as the three of them trained together and were brought to Medius together. He was glad to see her again after the three of them reunited in St. Curtis. After learning from Kazai that Sanjulo and he were in a secret relationship, Kieri expressed her support of it, even though opposite elements in love is frowned upon in Heaven. She was shocked to see Sanjulo die at the claws of a Demon, and tried to talk to him about it, but Kazai refused.

Lazuli[]

After Kieri was separated from Kazai and Sanjulo, she fought against Lazuli and Talus but was captured. Lazuli beat her up while she was captive, and when Kieri escaped, she set out to find her again. Following Talus' death, Lazuli vowed revenge on Kieri; she was willing to disobey orders by killing her to satisfy her personal grudge.

Lazuli can be considered a nemesis to Kieri; just the sight of her is enough to send Kieri into a panic. She however managed to fight and kill Lazuli in her berserk state after a long battle, but this event impacted her so much that she made a resolve to never kill again. Where other Angels see her slaying a berserk Demon as fulfilling a Warrior's dream, Kieri admits she found no joy in it, and that Lazuli didn't deserve to die.

Rhea Snaketail[]

Kieri met Rhea and Buwaro while in her rabbit form. While Rhea was initially confused at Kieri's condition, having never seen an Angel before, she nonetheless agreed to help her, earning Kieri's gratitude.

The two grew close over time, with Rhea teaching Kieri important lessons such as valuing her own happiness over the expectations of others. However, her strong personality sometimes made Kieri feel like Rhea hated her, prompting tension every now and then. Lately, Rhea and Kieri have had trouble communicating, with Rhea wanting her to focus on talking to Kazai instead; but they remain in good terms, although a little strained.

Buwaro Elexion[]

Upon meeting Buwaro, Kieri was terrified, due to her being taught Demons were monsters. But Buwaro's kind and considerate behavior baffled her so much that she let her guard down, which let her see Buwaro for the pure and innocent soul he really was.

She soon came to care about Buwaro, partly because of his childish naiveté and his constant efforts to keep her in good spirits. Upon realizing what a good singer Buwaro was, Kieri started to become attracted to him, even teaching him Angelic songs. Their relationship deepened further and further until it truly became romantic. Whenever they are faced with danger or someone threatening them, Kieri, having been trained as a warrior, does not hesitate to raise her sword. She also encourages Buwaro to improve however he can, showing her supportive side; in return, he supported her as much as he could during her depressive episode, learning Sign Lingo so they could communicate and encouraging her to talk about her family and feelings.

Sinclair Family[]

The Sinclair Family mainly allowed Kieri and her friends to travel with them thanks to her reputation as an Angel and the protection she offered with her Warrior skills. While Miranda was supportive of Kieri and Buwaro's relationship, Cliff was convinced it would not work and dissuaded Buwaro from pursuing it, as it would taint Kieri's reputation. She stayed with the Sinclairs during the Flower Festival and helped tend their stall, and helped them later on during the Demon attack by defending them from Haury's squad and healing Cliff's injuries; she left them in a hurry, thanking them for everything they did to help her.

Crunky[]

Crunky is a young Golden Wright Wyvern who was found and given to Kieri by Buwaro. Kieri quickly came to love the little Wyvern and became protective of her, defending her at swordpoint. She named her "Crunky" as it was the only suggestion the little one appeared to like (even though Buwaro got the word wrong).

Crunky has quickly come to care about and love Kieri, being able to recognize her in her rabbit form and being protective of her whenever someone upsets or threatens her mistress. She's stuck by her side ever since, even when Kieri was captured by Demons.

Kinako and her Family[]

Kieri, Buwaro, and Rhea first met Kinako and her family when her son Tirol took a shine to Buwaro, and they met Kinako and Sahne. At first, the two found it silly to think Kieri was a member of the Suizahn Family.

They met them again the next day, along with the fourth member of their family, Lakritz. Following the invasion, they expressed their support to Kieri and her friends, as they too wanted to change things. Kinako apologized to Kieri for not believing her the first time, and wished there could be more Warriors like her.
