Hell is the home and domain of the Demons within the Afterlife. It is also the place where all Medians go if they are considered 'evil' by Death. Although Hell itself is considered to be past Cerberus' gate, some may argue Hell begins with the River Styx and the Ring of the Slightly Damned.

Geography[]

Hell consists of three segments: Styx, The Ring of the Slightly Damned, and Hell itself. The Ring of the Slightly Damned consists of little more than dirt and rock, resembling a barren wasteland. Styx is a neon green river of an unknown liquid that somewhat resembles human faces. The gates to central Hell are massive black metal gates with a single padlock that only Cerberus can unlock. The inner parts of Hell are much more lively with volcanoes, lava streams, tormented souls, Demons, and the occasional dead tree.

Water does exist in Hell, mainly for the Water Demons to use for whatever torture they may have in mind for the more aquatic Medians (such as Khamega and Merfolk), and there's also frozen areas they can use as well.[1] Water Demons also tend to use the water as a recreational area.

While there is a day/night cycle in Hell, there are no sunsets or sunrises: nighttime takes the form of complete darkness that falls and disappears instantly, too fast for Median eyes to adjust.[2] During "daytime", the sky is a dark shade of brown with no visible light source. According to Cerberus, no one must come in or out of the gates at night.

Culture[]

Demons are highly aggressive and sadistic, or at least taught to be. They are not supposed to feel compassion or guilt, or to look out for weaker Demons; even those of a young age know of mercy-killing.[3] In Hell, the strongest rule, and pecking order is determined through physical conflict; Demons seen as "weaker" are often bullied.[4] However, Demons are not above receiving help from Medians or even Angels if they prove useful.

Schools seem to exist, though they mostly involve learning about torturing Medians in classes such as "Killology". Children, often orphans, are usually gathered up to be placed in training groups to become soldiers, under the supervision of older Demons. According to Chu, there are housing constructs somewhere within Hell, indicating that Demons do live in their own brand of civilization.[citation needed]

Most Demons seen in Hell tend to be occupied with torturing people and there doesn't seem to be much culture among the anarchy. Tortures are given levels, with Level 1 tortures being mild annoyances such as being made to listen to annoying, never-ending songs; other tortures involve whipping, splashing with boiling oil, breathing fire and forcing people to wear "really, really, really uncomfortable" footwear.[5] Azurai has been doing Level 5 tortures until he accidentally killed a demon during a fire-breathing class, and was then demoted to doing Level 1 tortures: this implies that greater levels of torture are more "prestigious".

Unlike Angels who speak their own Angelic language, Demons speak Lingo as well as Sign Lingo. The musical culture of Hell is mostly comprised of war chants and rowdy party songs, often with crude lyrics.[6] There is an arena for Demons to fight each other in, and for others to watch as entertainment.[7] Fighting is a major part of Demon culture: it is a display of strength, as well as a way to bond, pass time or come to a mutual understanding with their enemy.[8]

History[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Hell other than it being of Syndel's creation and a central of sordid acts of torture upon the damned souls of the sinful.

During the war, Angels would enter into Hell to fight, as well as in the Ring of the Slightly Damned, which was then used as a Demon nursery. At some point in the past, during Lakritz's youth, the last Angels in Hell were killed, except for one. Eventually, with his immortality and magic prowess, this Angel took over as leader of the Demons, claiming that he was the one and only Syndel, and kickstarted their plans to invade Medius, using the Ascension ritual.

15 years ago, Darius Elexion gave his life so that Iratu, Sakido and Buwaro could safely enter Hell; however, Sakido and Iratu abandoned Buwaro outside the gates. Both went on to become reputable soldiers within Hell's Army.

To Hell and Back[]

After her judgment, Rhea Snaketail was dropped off by Death in the Ring of The Slightly Damned with her Demon supervisor, Buwaro. While there wasn't much to do in the Ring, Rhea and Buwaro were given the task to obtain a note Iratu had and give it to Sakido. This gave the two a chance to enter Hell, where they encountered Azurai for the first time. Some time later, Rhea, Buwaro and Sakido would forcefully enter Hell as to hijack the Ascension ritual; but Syndel shot down Sakido with a Holy Arrow, killing her before she left Hell.
