Buwaro Elexion, deuteragonist of Slightly Damned, is an unusually kind and naive Demon from the Ring of the Slightly Damned. He spent most of his life alone with his pet rock as sole company, before being assigned as Rhea's supervisor during her stay in the Afterlife. He is the adopted child of Darius Elexion, and a younger brother figure to the Demons Sakido and Iratu. Escaping into Medius with Rhea, he meets Kieri Suizahn, an Angel with whom he'll form a romantic relationship.

Appearance[]

Buwaro, unlike most other Demons, looks frail and weak with a more humanoid appearance and less animalistic traits. He has white hair with two curved yellow horns protruding from his head, red eyes, small fangs, and large protruding ears; his right ear has a bite mark where some of it was torn off, his left ear has two small gold loop earrings in it. He also has a thin tail ending in a triangular pointed tuft. His hands and feet both have five black claws each. His fur is mostly purple with white streaks throughout.

After putting on Sakido's Sun Emblem, he gains two black bat-like wings with white claws. They are too small to fly and do not appear functional at all, but they seem to have some mobility.[1]

His preferred clothing is a black trench coat he received from his sister, a white shirt and red trousers. Following his fight with Denevol in Weyville, his shirt was destroyed. He wears his Star Emblem outside of his coat, but keeps the Sun Emblem inside just as Sakido did.

His sleeping attire is a pair of brown and green shorts. Prior to leaving St. Curtis, Buwaro picked up a set of monk clothing from the temple they were staying in. They consist of a gray robe, with some sizable tears on the bottom and a rope belt around his waist, and a brown hood with a single yellow button to allow him to put it on with ease; and without his horns being seen as nothing but animal ears.

Personality[]

Buwaro's naivety and kindness make him an anomaly among Demons. "Death" has described him as a "failure" of "normal Demon behavior", noting that "he would never intentionally kill anyone". While Fire Demons are particularly noted for their sadistic tendencies, making some of the best torturers in Hell, Buwaro does not remotely display any such inclinations. He is generally kind and passive, and easily gets frightened. While he's able to assert himself, he does not resort to violence unless defending himself or his friends.

Buwaro grew up mostly alone in the Ring of the Slightly Damned; a ring so barren and devoid of life that it’s not usually counted as a part of “real” Hell. His only constant companion was his pet rock Thadius, as well as Death who was known to visit him every now and then. His lack of constant company has made him somewhat "clingy"; he likes having friends, being very protective of them, and becomes very upset about the possibility of losing them. Buwaro's desire for company has made him very open and accepting of others, as he will try to befriend anyone he meets; he's been shown to be very polite in that regard.

Due to his peculiar upbringing, Buwaro has never trained or studied for anything, and as such knew nothing of the Great War that was fought between Heaven and Hell. When told by other Demons that Angels were their natural enemies, he claimed he didn't feel that way, as he didn't even know what Angels were. This made him very accepting of Kieri upon meeting her, but eventually backfired when he couldn't comprehend the baggage she carried regarding her family and status as a Warrior Angel. However, he's shown willingness to learn about history and Kieri's past in order to understand more. He also expressed desire to work on himself as to better protect her.

When he first met Rhea, Buwaro was very naive and childish, often to the point of annoyance. Over the course of the story, this side of him mellowed out, as events such as Sakido's death showed him the reality of the world and the stakes at hand. He gained in mental and emotional maturity, to the point he learned of topics such as how he and Kieri should have better expectations of each other, or how Demons and Angels have been wasting their time fighting when they could have been working together instead. However, he kept his innocent side as well, such as when he kept making excuses for Iratu and had to choose between him and Kieri.

Buwaro is known to be very affectionate. He is fond of physical contact such as hugs and headpats; as part of their romance, he and Kieri are almost always seen together, often holding hands and occasionally kissing. Most of the time, both in-comic and in outside artwork, the two would find themselves cuddling together in a loving manner.

Since arriving to Medius, he's become more aware of how Medians and Angels react toward Demons, but has tried not to let that get in the way of his relationship with his friends. However, during his time with Kieri, he started to show some resentment to the fact he was a Demon. He has shown much guilt for his kind causing death and destruction during the invasion of St. Curtis and has since started to form doubt over everything happening around him; especially once he learns that Iratu doesn't see him as the brother he thought he was and blames him for the deaths of their father and Sakido.

While Buwaro believes himself to be useless, he is unaware that his biggest strength is his kind and thoughtful personality. The more he learns about the world around him, the more he is able to relay to others about how things can be better for them in an attempt to raise their spirits. Through conversations with Kieri, he was able to make her feel better about herself regarding Demons and the relationship between her and Buwaro. On top of becoming knowledgeable through observation, he has become someone capable of providing moral support.

Powers and Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Buwaro is considerably weak as far as Demons go, is very poor in the ways of intellect and has had poor socialization skills. He has since improve thanks to Rhea and Kieri, who helped in teaching him Lingo, allowing him to read and write; he has even managed to read an entire story book by himself. They also encouraged him to be more physically fit and have improve some of his magical abilities. So far he has gotten a better hang of breathing fire but his actual combat skills are still very lacking; he seems to have the best use of his abilities when pushed closely to his demonic tendencies. He appears best suited as moral support for Kieri given his personality.

Fire Magic: Fire Demons have a natural affinity for Fire Magic, but Buwaro has never studied or trained his abilities. Originally, he could only use one spell which was his Fire Breath; however, he's trying to learn how to use Magic better.

  • Fire Breath: Being a Fire Demon, Buwaro has an innate Fire Magic ability to breathe flame from his mouth. He used to have difficulty with it, but has gotten the hang of it since.
  • Fireball: While traveling to St. Curtis, Buwaro attempted to learn Fire magic from Cliff and succeeded in conjuring a fireball with difficulty. In his impatience and frustration, he accidentally threw it into the air where it landed on Cliff's wagon, setting the roof alight until Kieri extinguished it. He was later able to conjure up a fireball while in St. Curtis without having to flail around but it was very small, showing that his skill is still lacking.
Crazywaro

Buwaro in his Berserk State

Berserk State: Prior to hatching, his egg was damaged, causing him to be hatched in a permanent berserk state. This condition persists to this day, so Buwaro must wear his Star Emblem at all times to avoid reverting. When in this form he triples in size, his fangs and horns lengthen, the tip of his tail bursts into flame, and he assumes a bestial posture. As with all Demons in this form, once in this state he will continue to attack anyone within sight until there is no one left before he begins to mutilate himself. Even as a baby, he was able to deal serious damage, clawing Darius' eye out.

  • Power Augmentation: While in this state, his strength, durability and overall fighting capabilities are increased to a certain degree. This is of course dependent on how powerful he already was prior to changing as even after having changed he can be defeated by a more experienced Demon, like Sakido in his case.
    • Improved Magic Ability/Power: Buwaro gains a much greater command of Magic once he transforms.
      • Fire Spin: Buwaro leaps into the air doing a forward spin. The flame on his tail becomes more intense, turning him into a flaming pin-wheel.
      • Fire Breath: His flame breath is drastically increased in power, travelling much further, wider, and seemingly being hotter.
    • Immense Durability: Buwaro was able to withstand multiple lightning attacks from Sakido, a veteran Wind Demon, before she could force his Star Emblem back on.
    • Enhanced Strength: The increase in size also drastically boosts his physical strength. He was able to tear Rhea to pieces in seconds.
BuwaroBerserk SD800

Buwaro's potion-induced state.

  • Red Potion-Induced Transformation: After consuming only a vial of the Red Potion from the Rainbow Reverie it can trigger his Berserk State without having to remove his Star Emblem. Wearing it seems to keep his sanity in check though not without some semblance of this form's natural vicious nature. Once the effects of the potion run its course, it reverts him back to normal, though leaving him drained of enough energy to leave him unconscious. Noticeably, while his eyes glow per usual, irises can be seen.
    • Self-Control: Because he still possesses his Star Emblem while transformed this way, he no longer attacks wildly and has control over most of his actions, though he needs someone like Rhea to keep him focused since his attacks can unintentionally harm others. He was able to single out a wagon that had Kieri in it and pursue it as a result of it. In addition, he seems capable of speech as he was able to call out Kieri's nickname, though not without a little bit of trouble, and it appears to be the only word he can say.

Night Vision: As a Demon, Buwaro can see extremely well in the dark. If the area is very dark or he needs extra clarity, his eyes can glow which provides basic light. Since Buwaro has red eyes, his eyes glow red when he does, which can make him oddly intimidating.

  • Enhanced Vision: Buwaro's eyes don't seem to dry out for extensive periods of time without having to blink. As a result, he is able to stare with his eyes open for long periods of time, even able to sleep with his eyes open.[2]

Inner Warmth: As with all Fire Demons, Buwaro seem to generate significant amounts of heat internally which makes him more resistant to cold; as noticed by Kieri, who said that Buwaro was warm, fuzzy and just nice to hug.[3]

Multilingual: Buwaro is capable of speaking in a few different languages (including Lingo), two of which he had to learn from others.

  • Angelic Language: Through his lessons with Kieri, Buwaro has recently shown the ability to sing an Angelic melody alone and in unison. Although he doesn't know how to speak it he only knows the songs that she taught him.
  • Sign Lingo: Since learning about it from Lakritz, Buwaro has spent some time with the Tamis family in learning how to perform Sign Lingo himself and was able to learn some of the basic hand movements. He also received a book before leaving St. Curtis that would help with his education on the matter.

Talented Singer: Buwaro apparently has an impressively good singing voice. Since discovering this, Kieri has been tutoring him in how to sing various Angelic songs.

Heat Resistance: Fire Demons are naturally resistant to intense heat which is especially important when breathing fire. Buwaro has held magical fire crystals in his hand without protection, and apparently without realizing or caring that it was so hot that Cliff had to use fire tongs to handle it.

  • Immunity to Spicy Food: Buwaro has demonstrated a seeming immunity to spicy foods like Fire Bee honey.

Enhanced Durability: Fire Demons have a good balance between physical and magical ability, they are less strong or durable than Earth Demons but are still difficult to injure. Buwaro has often injured himself, such as by playing catch with Thadius, but easily shakes it off once the immediate pain subsides. In particular, he has survived falling off several cliffs without significant internal injuries.

Possessions[]

Star Emblem: Given to him by Darius when he was only a baby, the pendant prevents him from going berserk. This means he must wear it at all times lest he immediately reverts.

  • Magic Power Boost: The pendant normally increases an Angel's magic power. Buwaro is a complete novice in magic so it's unclear if the pendant helps with this or not.
  • Enhanced Concentration: Normally the Star Emblem promotes greater concentration, which is helpful with magic. Since Buwaro is unskilled in Magic, this only serves to keep his mind clear.

Sun Emblem: He inherited it from Sakido after she died. When he put the pendant on, he grew small wings that are unable to fly. Unlike Angel wings, his own are flesh and bone, and he cannot mentally control them.

Thadius: Buwaro's pet rock. She was his best friend before Buwaro met Rhea and Kieri. He still carries Thadius around with him but she seems to be more of a keepsake from his home in the Ring of the Slightly Damned than a surrogate friend now. She was destroyed facing Lazuli.

Black Trench Coat: Originally owned by Sakido, Buwaro received this after she started visiting him. The coat is shown to be highly resilient and hard to damage. Even when his white shirt had been destroyed during a conflict with Denevol, his coat remained mostly intact.

Pimp Suit Disguise: A disguise Buwaro wore until he, Rhea and Kieri arrived in Riverside City. Rhea bought it unintentionally from a Jake in Farun who was playing a joke on her. It has been left behind in the Riverside shop.

Relationships[]

Rhea Snaketail[]

Buwaro was assigned as Rhea's Demon supervisor when she arrived in the Ring of the Slightly Damned. While he tried to torment her at first as was expected of him, she quickly overpowered him. As they had each other for sole company, they naturally grew closer; but after Sakido's death and their return to Medius, Rhea stepped in as Buwaro's new big sister.

While Rhea tends to grow annoyed or tired of Buwaro's antics, he's very affectionate towards her and easily confides in her. They fight together during the St. Curtis invasion.

Sakido Elexion[]

Sakido admits to not being a good sister to Buwaro, yet he loves her nonetheless. His overbearing nature was too much for her to handle, so she keeps her visits to a minimum, but still harbors some amity for him. Her death greatly affected Buwaro, and he started wearing her pendant in memory of her. He realized he knew very little about her; he asked Lakritz, who was a Hell's Army soldier like her, to tell him stories of Sakido.

Iratu Elexion[]

As Iratu only visited the Ring while drunk, during which he was much more amicable, Buwaro enjoyed his company and the games they played together. He noted that Iratu was always nice to him, albeit a little scary.

When they met again in St. Curtis, his behavior was entirely different, and Iratu insulted Buwaro, blamed him for Sakido and Darius' deaths, and tried to get rid of him. Buwaro admitted to Kieri that he didn't know whether he could forgive Iratu's actions, and sometimes thought he didn't want to see him ever again.

Darius Elexion[]

As a baby, Buwaro received the most attention from Darius, spending a lot of time in his arms. When he had to leave his children, Buwaro cried after him; in the following years of growing up alone, he forgot about him, but the name seemed to have stuck as he likely named Thadius after him. After reading his diary and learning of his story, Buwaro decided to take on Darius' last name as his own, as to honor his memory, and referred to himself as Buwaro Elexion ever since.

He was very affectionate towards "Death", who was a caring figure in his life, and often hugged him. When Buwaro learned the two of them were one and the same, he was happy to learn that his father was alive all along and loved him.

Kieri Suizahn[]

Buwaro found "Snowy" in the forest at a time where he was still under the shock of losing Sakido, and her presence seemed to comfort him. When she turned out to be a "Human" girl, he was very friendly towards her; this didn't change when he learned she was an Angel, as he didn't know about them at all. He was the one to suggest he and Rhea help Kieri find her brother, despite the daunting difficulty of such a task.

Kieri and Buwaro grew close despite their differences, to the point she got a crush on him which was soon reciprocated. There were many obstacles to their relationship however, such as Demons and Angels being mortal enemies, and Kieri coming from a clan of Warriors. Even when she started to doubt their relationship, mainly due to pressure from Kazai, Buwaro stuck to her and reassured her, going as far as to face against Iratu for her. He's very caring towards her and tries to help her any way he can, such as learning Sign Lingo so they could communicate.

Sinclair Family[]

For a long time, Cliff was distrustful of Buwaro, and advised him to not pursue his relationship with Kieri as he might taint her reputation. He tried to teach Buwaro Fire Magic, which backfired when his roof was set on fire. With time, however, he did start to care about Buwaro, eventually telling him that his reputation as an individual mattered more than the image of Demonkind. Miranda was more open to his presence, inviting him and his friends to join them on their way to Weyville. Sammy immediately saw through Buwaro's guise and recognized him as a Demon.

Tamis Family[]

Buwaro thinks of them as a nice family. Their son Tirol seems especially fond of him, going as far as to buy Sammy's puppet of Buwaro and defending him from Kazai. Sahne initially mistakes him for a fellow Hell's Army soldier, and ends up telling him about the Ascension ritual. While Lakritz is doubtful at first, he grows to care about Buwaro, as he sees in him the proof that animosity between Angels and Demons is taught and not innate, just as with Tirol. Kinako acts caringly with him, teaching him some Sign Lingo to help Kieri and kissing his forehead goodbye before they part.

A running gag involves Sahne, Kinako and Lakritz making innuendos that Buwaro doesn't understand at all, due to his naivety and young age.

Jake "Jay" Thorndyke[]

When J jokingly flirted with Kieri, Buwaro stood his ground before being promptly befriended. Buwaro seems to like them, complimenting their new clothes and happily being taught how to cook. While J admits to not have known Buwaro for long, they recognize the efforts he's made for Kieri, and offer to teach him the basics of Fire Magic.

Kazai Suizahn[]

Buwaro initially wanted to help Kieri find her brother again; he was a little wary of him being a powerful Warrior Angel, but still thought they could be friends. Despite a rocky start, as their first meeting happened while Kazai was held captive by Demons, Buwaro still did his best to be friendly and try to make peace, to which Kazai would respond with hostility, only stopping to reluctantly support of Kieri's wishes.

When Kazai started traveling with them, Buwaro kept trying to be friendly, offering him food and forgiving him for poisoning the soup, which left Kazai stumped as he didn't expect such reactions from a Demon. Buwaro encouraged Kieri to take her own decisions as to whether or not she would forgive her brother, and offered to learn about her past so he could understand their dynamic better. When Kazai went missing, Buwaro offered to go after him; and when he returned, his reaction was anger followed by sadness, as he couldn't understand why Kazai would forsake his sister's love after everything she's done to help him. Since then, the two seemed to have made up, which Rhea referred to as the birth of the "Kieri Suizahn Fan Club".
