Grant Angels their abilities

Angel Emblems, also called pendants, are magical talismans granted to Angels in Heaven. They are what gives Angels their wings and halos.

Usage[]

There are three pendants in total, each representing a gift of light that Mother Gaia gave Medius: the sun, the star and the old moon. They can be worn like necklaces, or attached to a belt or armor piece, but holding them in one's hand is enough in order to use their power. Angels with more than one Emblem in their possession will typically wear them on a diagonal sash.

Emblems are manufactured in Heaven by artisans like Darius Elexion. The crafting process for each Emblem is described as being long and difficult to master, and few Angels learn the craft. As such, Emblems are in limited supply, and must be earned by passing a test; both Caretaker and Warrior Angels can take those tests to earn the corresponding pendants. The more pendants an Angel has, the higher their rank in Heaven society. Few Angels can hope to obtain all three Emblems and reach the highest rank of their respective caste.[1]

While Emblems are made for Angels, they affect Demons as well; however, all Emblems have a magical enchantment placed on them which prevents non-Angels from wearing or even touching them. The Holy Protection Enchantment is not necessary to the Emblems' function and can be removed, so that Demons can use them, although only an artisan Angel has the necessary knowledge and magical skill to perform such an alteration. Medians do not gain any effects from wearing Emblems.

Sun Emblem[]

Angel Sun Emblem

Kieri explains the Sun Emblem

The Sun Emblem is the most basic Emblem, and the first that all Angels must earn. The test required to earn it takes the form of a flight obstacle course, which requires prior training; it can be taken as early as 10 years old. Angels who have earned this Emblem are called, simply enough, "Sun Angels"; more specifically, Caretaker Angels are called Principalities, while Warrior Angels are called Archangels.

This Emblem gives an Angel their wings; however, as it is mentally controlled, the Angel can conceal their wings if they wish, and have them magically retract into their body. Kieri Suizahn has said that it also "calms the hearts" of Angels; this can be interpreted as the Emblem promoting emotional self-control to remain calm in the face of trouble.

Sakido received her Sun Pendant from her foster father, Darius. Her wings had been seriously injured when she was very young which prevented her from flying. Putting on the Sun Emblem caused them to spontaneously regenerate, rapidly growing back, and enable her to fly. The wings she received from the pendant seem to possibly be better than her natural wings would have been. When Buwaro puts this pendant on, he grew wings as well, but the effect is much less successful on him as they are too small to fly. It appears that Demons can't mentally withdraw their wings like Angels do, as these wings are actual blood and bone.

Star Emblem[]

Angel Star Emblem

Kieri explains the Star Emblem

The Star Emblem is the second Emblem that Angels earn. Caretaker Angels who earned a Star Emblem are called Dominions. As Kazai is in possession of a Star Emblem, it can be assumed the required exam can be taken around the age of 15; Kieri partook the test to obtain it but failed, causing another of her mother's verbal abuses towards her.

This Emblem improves an Angel's Magic power; most notably, it grants them a Halo of glowing Holy energy, signifying they are ready to cast spells at the peak of their ability.[2] The Emblem is supposed to help improve "concentration" which can be read as determination, willpower, or even mental clarity. It also allows Kieri and Kazai greater control over their curse transformations.

Buwaro received his Star Pendant from his foster father, like Sakido. He was born in a state of permanent berserk rage from sustaining injuries as an egg, and the only cure was to wear the pendant, as Darius reasoned it could help "clear Buwaro's mind of chaos". This shows the Star Pendant can help mitigate a Demon's Berserk State somewhat, and prevent it altogether. When Buwaro went berserk anyway, his pendant allowed him to retain control over his actions; similarly, when a berserk Sakido touched to it, she seemed to recover some sanity and held back on attacking Buwaro. However, the Star Pendant does not seem to boost a Demon's magic ability, nor does it grant them a Halo.

Moon Emblem[]

Angel Moon Emblem

Kieri explains the Moon Emblem

The Moon Emblem is the final Emblem in the sequence. Only Angels who already have their Sun and Star Emblems can earn this one. Caretaker Angels who earned it are called Authorities, and Warrior Angels are called Seraphs. Its image was based on the first moon that Mother Gaia created, until Father Syndel ate it because it lit up 'his nighttime'.

This Emblem increases the Angel's physical strength and endurance. It does not appear to have a visible effect like the other two and may actually be passive instead of switched on and off like the others.

Iratu received his Moon Emblem from his foster father as well. Unlike his siblings, Iratu didn't have an injury that needed to be healed, although he was physically stunted for an Earth Demon, and wanted it out of jealousy rather than necessity. When wearing the Moon Emblem, Iratu's size increases drastically, becoming the biggest Earth Demon in Hell. If he removes it, he shrinks to his normal size, though he will apparently experience growing pains when doing so.

Trivia[]

  • Buwaro's Star pendant remained active even when it was being tugged away from him[3]; however, Iratu is able to switch the effect of his Moon pendant on and off while wearing it, using a modified clasp.
  • While Emblems are meant for Angels, they are modeled after Median celestial bodies. This implies they were invented after the creation of Medius, even though Heaven and Angels existed before.[4]
